Project Brief
Zero was developed as a mechanical keyboard concept for Monokei, combining a complete key layout with a compact information display and six dedicated custom keys.
The design study focused on the case architecture, low-profile key language, and the visual integration of a new display-and-control cluster.
The Challenge
The challenge was to introduce live feedback and programmable controls without making the keyboard feel like a separate dashboard or disrupting the familiarity of the main key field.
Design Exploration
The concept explored how a small information display and programmable controls could be integrated into a full-size keyboard without creating a visually separate interface zone.
The display was positioned within the upper-right key field and designed around lightweight information such as Bluetooth channel, battery status, typing speed, and session activity. Six C1–C6 keys were introduced alongside it as a configurable extension of the existing layout rather than a standalone control panel.
Form studies focused on keeping the overall architecture visually thin and restrained. A centered USB-C connection and interchangeable rubber feet were proposed as simple details that could support different typing angles while preserving the keyboard’s minimal rear profile.
Design Proposal
The resulting proposal combines a restrained monochrome body with a bright green interaction layer, allowing the keyboard’s character to emerge through typography, screen motion, and customizable controls.
Zero proposes a way for functional feedback to become part of a keyboard’s visual identity while keeping the physical object quiet, thin, and familiar.
