Concept Study
Overview
OBEX imagines a face-worn fashion object for a near future where cameras and sensing technologies have become a common part of everyday life.
Rather than trying to solve the issue of surveillance, the project uses this social change as a starting point. It explores how changing attitudes toward visibility, anonymity, and self-expression could influence the objects we choose to wear.
The project takes inspiration from the medieval visor—an object originally designed for protection, but also known for its strong visual identity.
Context
Cameras, sensors, and machine vision are becoming increasingly common in our everyday surroundings.
As being observed becomes a normal part of public life, it may also begin to influence how people dress and express themselves.
OBEX imagines what kind of new wearable object could emerge from this cultural change.
Inspiration
Medieval helmets and visors became the main visual reference for the project.
Although they were designed for protection, they also changed the appearance of the wearer. Covered faces, repeated structures, decorative details, and strong silhouettes created a new visual identity.
OBEX brings these characteristics into a contemporary wearable object through new materials, proportions, and construction.
Reinterpretation
Rather than directly copying medieval armor, OBEX takes several of its key visual elements and gives them a new purpose.
Radiating ribs reinterpret the segmented structure of a visor, while a wide textile surface creates a strong horizontal shape across the face. Eyewear-like supports keep the structure around the head visually light.
By combining rigid and soft elements, OBEX sits somewhere between eyewear, fashion, and an industrial design object.
Form Exploration
The form development focused on balancing an unfamiliar silhouette with details from familiar wearable products.
The wide surface gives OBEX a distinctive presence, while the lightweight structure separates it visually from conventional protective equipment.
Decorative lines and layered surfaces are used not only as functional details, but as part of the object's visual identity.
The Object
The final concept imagines OBEX as a personal fashion object shaped by the visual culture of a more observed future.
It can be worn, folded, and stored in a dedicated case, giving this speculative object the familiar qualities of an everyday personal accessory.
Instead of trying to disappear, OBEX intentionally creates a new silhouette around the wearer.
Reflection
OBEX is not intended to predict a specific future product or offer a technical solution to surveillance.
Instead, the project explores how social change could influence the objects we wear and the way we express ourselves.
By translating the visual language of the medieval visor into a contemporary fashion object, OBEX presents one possible aesthetic response to a future where being observed has simply become part of everyday life.
