Overview
Chronoloop was created for a RenderWeekly challenge, inspired by the rotating number mechanism of a perpetual calendar.
Hours, minutes, and seconds are separated into individual numeral bands, turning the passage of time into a continuous sequence of rotating forms.
Inspiration
Perpetual calendars display changing information through physical movement rather than hands or digital screens.
Chronoloop takes this simple behavior and applies it to time, imagining each unit as part of an endless rotating cycle.
Form Exploration
The form was explored in both vertical and horizontal orientations, using stacked numeral bands and a narrow central structure to create a strong repeating rhythm.
A worn silver finish emphasizes the physical quality of the object, while blackletter numerals contrast with the precise geometry and give the clock a more distinctive visual character.
Resolution
The final concept brings hours, minutes, and seconds together as a compact series of rotating loops.
Repeated numeral bands define the overall form, while motion studies show the numbers continuously entering, passing through, and leaving the visible surface as time changes.
The object can stand vertically or rest horizontally, allowing the same visual system to create different sculptural compositions.
Reflection
Chronoloop explores how the continuous nature of time can be expressed through typography, repetition, physical form, and motion.
